This has been a fairly busy reading week for me. I finished "Never Forgotten" by Terri Reid. It's the third book in the Mary O'Reilly paranormal mystery series. While I enjoyed it, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first two books.
Next I read "Someone Else's Son" by Sam Hayes. Sadly, I didn't love this book. It had potential but didn't have enough twists and turns or momentum for my liking.
Currently I'm reading a YA supernatural book. If you're a fan of the House of Night series by Kristin Cast and P.C Cast you'll like this book as well. It's the first book in the series and I liken it to a Hogwart's for vampires. So far, so good. I'm just over half way through.
Next? I think I'll read the second book in The Hunger Games series. I still have ROOM by Emma Donoghue on my bedside table but I need to be in the right frame of mind for the kind of book I think it is. I picture it being fairly disturbing? Am I right?

I am currently reading Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. Drew gave me a look when I brought this one home but he's a guy who reads sci-fi. So far it is similar to her other novels which I enjoyed. I'll let you know what I think next week.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the 3rd book in the Outlander series, Voyager. I read the first two AGES ago and picked up this one for an easy summer read. It's not bad, but I remember liking the first two alot more. Maybe my likes have just changed.
ReplyDeleteOh Nicole. At least your man reads!! A month ago Brad and I were sitting in the living room on the couch. We each had a coffee (he came over to the dark side last year) and we each had a book in our hands. I just looked over at him and, without even looking at me, he says "Yes, I know. You're loving that we're both drinking coffee and reading together. This is total bliss for you.". Ha! Does he know me or what!?! Btw, he was reading a business book which just barely passes for a book in my book. ;) My goal now is to get him to read for (wait for it!) ... FUN!! Ooooo, I love me a challenge!! ;)

Laurie - maybe you have heard of some of her other books: Peony in Love, or, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan?
ReplyDeleteKym -- I read the first 6 books (I think it was 6, anyway) in that series years ago. I enjoyed them but they tended to drag after awhile. Too wordy and descriptive. I found the second book hard to get into but really enjoyed 3 and 4. I have an autographed copy of "A Breath of Snow and Ashes" but have yet to read it (eeks!).
ReplyDeleteIf you love historical fiction check out Sara Donati's "Into the Wilderness" series. Donati and Gabaldon are actually friends and Claire and Jamie are mentioned in "Into the Wilderness" but don't make an appearance.
I find Donati's writing not as heavy, her storylines move faster and I loved her characters. I also love that it's not just two main characters that carry the entire series. She passes off the torch easily to younger characters (which isn't an easy thing to do without irritating readers). Donati's books take place mainly in the US and Canada. The whole series was wonderful!
Good luck with the Outlander series. It sure does make me want to travel to Scotland and makes me weak in the knees when I hear a Scottish accent. ;)
Nicole -- I think I've heard of The Secret Fan but I definitely haven't read any by that author. Have you read other books by her?
ReplyDeleteJust finished Mourning Gloria by Susan Wittig Albert. Was good, but it's part of a series that should be read in order. Now reading The Body in the Gazebo by Katherine Hall Page which is also part of a series that should be read in order. Not far enough in to comment on how good it is yet but I have liked all of Page's past books.
ReplyDelete@Nicole: if you like Shanghai Girls, there's a sequel that just came out called "Dreams of Joy". Also, one of the books on my nightstand is by The Pioneer Woman about her relationship with her husband. I'll let you know if the book is as good as all the recipes of hers that I have tried!
