I hope everyone is successful at keeping cool this week! I can't remember when we've had such a long stint of truly H-O-T weather in southern Ontario! Yes, it does get quite hot here in the summer but this is ridiculous!!
So, I hope you've been able to find a pool to swim in to beat the heat and managed to bring a book along to read in the shade! I've spent the better part of 2 weeks soaking in my parents' pool which, just due to the heat, has a temperature of 92F!!!! Yup, a mere 6 degrees lower than their hot tub. Not quite as refreshing as one would like but beggers (ie ME) can't be choosers, right?
This past week I finished reading "Catching Fire" by Suzanne Collins. It's the second book in the Hunger Games series. Like the first book it was a quick read. I'll be posting that book review either today or tomorrow
I'm almost finished reading "One Deadly Sin" by Annie Solomon. It's a suspense read and is pretty good.
Next? I have a humourous mystery series I'd like to start on my Kindle but my oldest son is currently borrowing dear old mom's Kindle to read "The Hunger Games". If not that book, then I'll pick up ROOM by Emma Donoghue which has received rave reviews from everyone I've talked to. The topic has me a little leery but the overall kudos for this book have outweighed my squeemishness.
So, what are you all reading? Did you love it? Hate it? Would you recommend it?
I just finished Silver Girl by Elin Hilderbrand last week but forgot to comment. This one is great for the summer - light and beach-y. Last night I finished Before I Go To Sleep by Steven Watson... and I couldn't sleep. Hah - this one is seriously creepy but has an ending that one cannot predict. I like that.
ReplyDeleteI have "Before I Go To Sleep" on my 'gotta read list' ever since one of my sister's recommended it. I have a hold for it at one of my local libraries and should get it either today or tomorrow. Surprised it wasn't in high demand. Gotta love small town libraries!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading Never a Bride by Amelia Grey. It was a freebie on the Kobo site so my expectations weren't all that high. It actually wasn't bad though. Well written, a little bit of mystery, and a bit of a twist at the end that I didn't see coming. It was a nice light read! I have no idea what I'm going to read next. Probably another one of the free/cheap books sitting on my Kobo. I'm waiting for Kobo to realease a coupon code before I buy the Game of Thrones set. And I also want to read the next Hunger Games book, but I zoomed through the other one so fast that it makes it kind of hard to justify the $8.
ReplyDeleteOkay...my what to read problem has been solved! I just got an email from the library that my hold is available on a book I have been waiting on for a long time! I'll be reading The Land of the Painted Caves by Jean M. Auel. The Earth Children books are my personal fave. I'm very excited! Excuse me while I go immerse myself in ancient Europe.

April -- free (or cheap ebooks)are great. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I really enjoy a cheaper read. I've learned that cheaper doesn't always mean lesser quality (at least most of the time!). I found author Terri Reid's books which I really enjoy just because her $2.99 price got me to take a chance.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Jean M Auel books? I've never read any of those books. Didn't she write the "Clan of the Cave Bears" series too? I wasn't sure if cavemen would be interesting enough but apparently they are b/c it's a hugely popular series!!
We are struggling with the heat here as well...temps to get into the 100s today :(
ReplyDeleteI am one of the few people left I think that has not read Room...the subject matter was just too disturbing to me, and even though it may be a wonderfully written book, which it appears to be from the reviews, I know it's not for me.
Laurie --The Land of the Painted Caves is the final book of the Clan of the Cave Bear series. Ms. Auel has loooong periods in between books. It really is a great series! I'm not so sure that this book is going to live up to some of the earlier books in the series, but it's good so far. I highly recommend you give the Clan of the Cave Bears a try when you have a chance. I think you would enjoy it. It's at the top of my fave list. And I think the other books on my fave list (Harry Potter, Outlander, Wilderness series, Otherworld) are on yours too.
ReplyDeleteBookGirl - that is the reason why I've held off. It sounds like subject matter that I just don't want to read about. But one of my friends who raved about it said that it is truly an amazing book so I'll probably pick it up. It's the writing in the words and grammar of a 5 year old that threw me and kind of annoyed me when I read the first 20 or so pages.

ROOM is phenomenal. The topic is handled so well, and if you are a mother, it will hit home that much more. You should definitely not be afraid to read it!
ReplyDeleteMichelle - I'll definitely pick ROOM up soon. It's been staring me down for the past month or so. I received a hardcover copy of the book from my FBM (Fairy Book Mother) and have heard rave reviews about it. If it's no more intense than Chevy Steven's "Still Missing" then I'll be fine. It's the fact that it deals with a child that had me iffy on reading it.
ReplyDeleteLaurie, The Children of the Earth series is six books. The first two...Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of the Horses are awesome. The Mammoth Hunters is the third, and it's quite good too. But I definitely find that the series is "less good" after that book. The fourth book is the Plains of Passage, then Shelters of Stone, and finally the newest one is the Land of the Painted Caves. I'm not enjoying this one as much, but I'm hoping that it is going to tie up loose ends and finish of the series.
ReplyDeleteI fishished Voyager, the 3rd book in the Outlander series. I can't say I liked it. In fact I was pretty disappointed. I read the first 2 a long time ago and remembered liking them. I guess my tastes have changed. I found it unlikely, and predicatable all at the same time. The characters were boring and each chapter felt like a repeat of the previous one, with a few details changed. Needless to say I am done with Jamie and Claire! I'm on to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest :)
