I hope everyone has had a very fruitful book filled week of reading!!! As I mentioned on Twitter and Facebook I finally read ROOM by Emma Donoghue. It was a good read but was one of the longest and most difficult book reviews I've done. There were great parts of the book and parts I didn't totally love.
I'm currently about a third of the way through "Mistress of Rome" by Kate Quinn. I picked this book up at the library solely based on it's picture (oooo, pretty!!) and the title. It's been awhile since I've had a great historical fiction read in front of me. So far, I'm loving it! Set in the first century Rome it's got suspense, vivid descriptions, love, betrayal ... all wrapped up in a nicely flowing story!
Next up for me? Who knows. I have "The Boy in the Moon" by Ian Brown as well as "The Princess of Nowhere" by Prince Lorenzo Borghese (another of my 'oooo, pretty cover' picks) or I could choose "The Girl in the Garden" by Kamala Nair (a book recommended by another book blogger on Twitter). Has anyone read any of these books? Which would you recommend?

I finished a book this morning - Too Big To Miss by Sue Ann Jaffarian. A friend loaned me her Kindle edition. It's a fast and entertaining mystery.
ReplyDeleteI started What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty but I'm only a few pages in.
I listened to Room several months ago. Not sure I could have read it but listening turned out to be the right choice for me. Given the subject it's not a book I would have read without all the hype. I also read Mistress of Rome - it's part of a series! I thought it was pretty good. And yes, the cover is lovely.
I just finished book 1 in The Game of Thrones series. I loved, loved loved it! Can't wait to dive back in to Winterfell and the Seven Kingdoms. I have the next three books in the series waiting for me on my Kobo, but I took a break to read the first Sookie Stackhouse book as it came available on my library hold. It's an "okay" book. I have a feeling I will read more of this series when the mood strikes, but I can't say that I'll be in a rush to do so.
ReplyDeleteI am currently reading The Book of Awesome - I like it as it fits my lifestyle right now (with a newborn and a two year old I never seem to have time to read). This is easy as I can read a page or two and not have to remember what happened when I last read it and what not.

ReplyDeleteMary - when I picked up Mistress of Rome I noticed that there was another book "Daughters of Rome" (plus a new book coming in 2012). I'm looking forward to readin the series.
April - I've heard so much about this "Game of Thrones" series!! I'm going to have to see what they're all about. I had the same feeling about Sookie Stackhouse. I read the first book years ago and just didn't get what the hype was all about. I didn't hate it but didn't love it either.
Mommies Favourites -- I've seen The Book of Awesome in stores but haven't picked it up. Whenever I see it I'm always reminded of Barney Stinson (from How I Met Your Mother fame) whom I love!!! :) What genre is it in? Humourous?
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember those busy days with a baby in one arm and a toddler in the other. Short chapter books are much easier to get through and stay focused on! :)
Just finished Spider Web by Earlene Fowler. Great characters, wonderful setting, and two mysteries to solve! Next I'm going to read Save Me by Lisa Scottoline. Not that I have time to read with everything that I'm supposed to get done in the next few weeks... :)

Hello, I found you at my friend barefeetinthekitchen and I'm following you immediately. I love cooking and I love books. At the moment we're in Rome for the summer and I'm reading Jane Eyre (for about the 10th time, I love it!) and Oblomov, a book which I read in Russian but didn't understand all of it so I'm now rereading it in Italian. By the way, I was in Toronto for the whole summer in 1970 taking a Russian Intensive Summer Course at Toronto University. I had so much fun, I found Italian pizzerias and even a gelato shop.
ReplyDeleteI'm still working on "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest". I have a 20 month old at home so I don't get much time to read. I am enjoying it, as much as I did the first 2 in the series. Another suggestion is "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand". It is a lovely, light romantic comedy that takes place in the English countryside. A perfect summer read.
ReplyDeleteI am reading "I'd know you anywhere" by Laura Adderman? I will have to get the author's name. It's about a woman who was kidnapped and raped by a serial killer and then released instead of being killed like all of his other victims. Fast forward 15 years later, he contacts her, yikes! JUST started, so I can;t give any opinions yet, but it looked interesting in the library, so I picked it up. I will let you know what it is like.

Aleisha -- "I'd Know You Anywhere" sounds like quite the thriller! Not sure I'm brave enough to read it though. :s
