The Book of Negroes

If you're looking for an amazing book that you won't stop thinking about long after you've finished the book ... THIS IS IT!! If you're a fan of Alex Haley's "Roots" then you've got to pick up this book. It's written by Canadian author Lawrence Hill. It is well written and totally enthralling.

Author: Lawrence Hill

Note: In countries other than Canada, this book is called "Someone Knows My Name".

Synopsis: Kidnapped as a child from Africa, Aminata Diallo is enslaved in South Carolina but escapes during the chaos of the Revolutionary War. In Manhattan she becomes a scribe for the British, recording the names of blacks who have served the King and earned freedom in Nova Scotia, Canada. But the hardship and prejudice there prompt her to follow her heart back to Africa, then on to London, where she bears witness to the injustices of slavery and its toll on her life and a whole people.

My Thoughts: I adored this book. I loved that it was from a woman's perspective. Not as gritty as "Roots" but still a really good read. Looking forward to reading more from this Canadian author.

My Rating: 5/5

  1. I LOVED this book!!! I couldn't stop thinking about it and all of the implications of the story when I was finished. We travelled to Halifax this summer and the Maritime Museum had an exhibit portraying the "exodus" to the maritimes from the US by the slaves. The book was a part of the exhibit.

  2. Kym,
Have you read "Roots" yet?? It's another amazing book. I still haven't seen the miniseries from the 70's (or was it the 80's?) but I hear it was great too.

  4. Laurie, I am currently watching the mini series of this book, have you seen it? I haven't read the book but I am really enjoying the tv series. If you've seen it, how does it compare, as I do have the book on my kindle.

  7. then you'll definitely want to read the book. Maybe not right away but at some point. I shudder to see how short my review of this book is. It was one of my first reviews. It's to the point I guess. I loved it!
