I'm one of those people who adore reading, which is why I'm a self-proclaimed bookworm. I love snuggling up on the couch with a book and a cuppa coffee. Nothing better ... I think. See, I was on Todays Parent's Book Forum (LOVE that place) and someone mentioned that she had a Sony E-Reader. So I looked it up at http://www.sonystyle.ca/ and I was quite impressed. Not impressed enough to shell out the $400 they're asking but I was impressed nonetheless.
I know that there is another E-reader out there (the Kindle) getting a lot of hype because it's soon to be released here in Canada. Oprah was singing it's praises earlier this year and declared it one of her favourite things but other than that I didn't know a whole lot about it.
So, my question is: are you a diehard paper book kind of person or would you be interested (if money wasn't an issue) to try one of those E-readers? I think it would be amazing to bring an E-reader on vacation (you can have up 350 books in it without any extra memory and the battery lasts for 2 weeks or 7500 page turns!). It also has a built-in dictionary and lots of other bells and whistles ... but I digress.
Are you an "old-fashioned" reader or an E-Reader? For me, I think I could do a bit of both. I'm still a total and utter library addict so I couldn't give that up but I've gotta say that taking 350 books with me to peruse while on vacation sounds mighty fine too! What do you think? ReplyDeleteI'm new here (found you on TP) can I join in? It's funny you should bring this up. I was just thinking about the subject of e-books today. And no - I didn't see it on TP lol! Actually I came across a link today that Chapters/Indigo is giving away a free e-book to launch their new e-book service. Anyways, I went and checked out the offered books, and gave it some thought, and decided that I'm just a paper book kinda person. I can't imagine that reading would give me the same sort of satisfaction if I was doing it on a screen. There's some about the pages and feel of a book that relaxes me. And I read in order to get myself AWAY from the screen time lol. Having said that, I can definitely see the advantage that you mentioned of taking the reader on holidays instead of a bunch of books! But alas...the price tag of the reader puts it out of my reach anyways.

I prefer a hard copy to all the new fangled gizmos they keep coming out with. I will leave those gadgets to those young whipper snappers and tech savvy people. I am an old fashioned gal (at 34, hehe) Note to self, get back my meds....j/k :P
ReplyDeleteI too am a TP'er, and came here looking for a recipe you mentioned. But the eBook message caught my eye. My geek-toy-loving father in law bought us one for Christmas last year. I've read a few books on it, and plan to read more. Do I prefer paper? Yes - there is something satisfying about flipping through pages of an actual book. Would it be convenient to take travelling? Yes, definately. The built in back light is good for reading in low light conditions (think overseas flights when everbody around you is sleeping and you're trying to read without disturbing anyone).
ReplyDeleteAlong with missing the feeling of paper, it bothers me to think of the heavy metals and non-renewable resoures and energy that went in to producing this gadget.
I also don't like buying books - I'd rather borrow from the library. I have recently discovered, though, that I can now 'borrow' books for download to the reader ... I have yet to test it out.

ReplyDeleteAs you know, my life and work revolves around books. Lots and lots of books. :) Nothing will ever replace a real book for me. Ever. The feel, the smell...there's nothing like curling up with a great book. I do recognize there are uses for an ebook reader. They're great for traveling as you can have numerous books on the one ebook instead of having to lug around a bunch of books (which I have been known to do!). I will never replace my books with an ebook reader.
ReplyDeleteI like having a book to carry around the house. I can't imagine taking an e-reader into the bathroom with me, let alone the bathtub!!! If I want to be in front of an electronic device there is always the computer. And on vacation, do I really want to worry about someone stealing my very expensive e-reader if I'm down by the pool or beach and want to take a swim? It's unlikely that someone would steal a paper book though. Although the space that e-books takes up would be much less. :)
ReplyDeleteBooks..all the way. It's all about the ritual. Jammies, comfy bed, all curled up with my book. Books are just about my favourite thing on earth...well...other than chai lattes at Starbucks.
