I have now read this book FOUR times - in print and digital audiobook. That says a lot, because for someone who reads as much as I do, it's rare for a book to capture my attention so well that I want to revisit it several times.
The Blood of Eden trilogy by Julie Kagawa is one of those series.
The Immortal Rules is the first book in the trilogy, and I began listening to this digital audiobook two weeks ago as I painted my sons' bedrooms while I was self-isolating. I wanted something to pass the time but knowing I could potentially zone out in a painting-induced mental haze, I wanted to be able to easily jump back into the plot. Re-reads are great for that!
But before turning on this e-audiobook, I didn't think a lot about the content and how it relates to our current circumstances. So, I'm going to give you all fair warning. In our current pandemic with Covid-19, if your anxiety is at its max, you may want to put this book on your TBR list … but perhaps for a later date. Post pandemic, maybe? My concern is based on the backstory which is based on the aftermath of a virus ('Red Lung disease') that kills off the majority of the human race leaving the survivors at the mercy (and fangs) of the master vampires that now control them. While I'm pretty certain we don't have to worry about vampires, I thought I'd warn readers who need to distance themselves from the pandemic.
So, if you're okay with how close to home part of this story hits with our current fight against Covid-19 and are eager for a dystopian story filled with an amazing cast, some creepiness and a story that will grip you from beginning to end, then I cannot recommend this book series enough! It is, hands down, one of my favourite Teen series … evah.
Filled with adventure, an amazing cast, a kick butt female main character (of Asian descent - which is rare), a bit of humour and amazing action scenes, I think you'll enjoy following Allison Sekemoto as she learns how to live as a newly made vampire in a post-apocalyptic world while trying not to give in to her monstrous tendencies.
Note: Therese Plummer was amazing as narrator in this edition from Audible.ca.
Book Description from GoodReads: To survive in a ruined world, she must embrace the darkness…Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a walled-in city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten. Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them - the vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself dies and becomes one of the monsters.
Forced to flee her city, Allie must pass for human as she joins a ragged group of pilgrims seeking a legend - a place that might have a cure for the disease that killed off most of civilization and created the rabids, the bloodthirsty creatures who threaten human and vampire alike. And soon Allie will have to decide what and who is worth dying for…again.
Enter Julie Kagawa's dark and twisted world as an unforgettable journey begins.
