Rock Paper Scissors

When a couple wins a weekend away at an old chapel on the edge of Blackwater Loch in Scotland, they take advantage of this free trip in the hopes of mending their fracturing relationship.

Amelia is eager to take her workaholic screenwriter husband Adam somewhere his work cannot follow him. An old Scottish chapel-turned-B&B, complete with snowstorm will do the trick. Told using multiple POVs of the couple, as well as letters written by Mrs. Wright to her husband on their wedding anniversary each year, the story soon takes a chilling turn when creepy things begin happening at this secluded B&B.

This story gets full marks for its chilling, gothic atmosphere and a good final twist which made up for the large lull in the middle. The old chapel was a fantastic locale and paired with the snowstorm, it gives the story a locked room feel, and Feeney's vivid descriptions make it easy for readers to imagine the creeeeaking doors, the cobwebby cold cellar, and quiet whispers. A great October read for sure!

The characters (except for Bob the dog) were a pretty hateful and unreliable bunch, but despite their lack of likeability I was drawn into the premise. But I have a rather large gripe - some plot points were never tied up and I felt readers weren't given clear reasons for the characters' motivations.

Overall, this was an eerie and atmospheric read making it a good pick for readers who like some malice, a hearty dose of marital baggage, and creepy locales in their thrillers.

Note: Once this book fades from my memory a bit I plan to listen to the audiobook which features the oh-so-talented Richard Armitage as one of the narrators. Chilling indeed.

Book Description from GoodReadsThink you know the person you married? Think again…

Things have been wrong with Mr and Mrs Wright for a long time. When Adam and Amelia win a weekend away to Scotland, it might be just what their marriage needs. Self-confessed workaholic and screenwriter Adam Wright has lived with face blindness his whole life. He can’t recognize friends or family, or even his own wife.
Every anniversary the couple exchange traditional gifts – paper, cotton, pottery, tin – and each year Adam’s wife writes him a letter that she never lets him read. Until now. They both know this weekend will make or break their marriage, but they didn’t randomly win this trip. One of them is lying, and someone doesn’t want them to live happily ever after.

Ten years of marriage. Ten years of secrets. And an anniversary they will never forget.

Rock Paper Scissors is the latest exciting domestic thriller from the queen of the killer twist, New York Times bestselling author Alice Feeney.
