Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing up a Wizard

Tom Felton is best known for his portrayal of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter film franchise and I'm happy to say that this memoir exceeded my expectations.

Tom's narration of the audiobook has an easy-going, chatting with a chum feel as he candidly shares his ups and downs, successes and struggles in his professional and personal lives. He begins with his early life, how he got his start in acting and life as a child actor.

I'm a huge Harry Potter fan so my inner Potterhead loved that Felton brings readers inside Hogwarts, sharing many anecdotes from the film sets and describing the friendships he made (and continues to maintain) with fellow cast and crew. He balances these humorous retellings of life on set with candid descriptions and an acute sense of vulnerability as he details his struggles with substance abuse and mental health.

Despite playing a famous villain on screen, Tom Felton has been able to lead a relatively normal life, unlike a few of his Harry Potter castmates. He has a successful career and genuinely seems like a regular guy who you could sit with in the Three Broomsticks and have a nice chat over a pint or two of butterbeer.

Felton's portrayal of the Draco Malfoy character in the Harry Potter films is what drew me to read this book and I'm thrilled that I enjoyed even more than I had expected. This was an outstanding memoir filled with humour, humility, and candor and whether you call yourself a Potterhead or are a mere Muggle, I would highly recommend this memoir - particularly in audiobook format. Now go and Accio this book.

My Rating: 5 stars

Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
First Published: October 18, 2022
Narrator: Tom Felton
Run Time: 6.5 hours

Book Description from GoodReadsThey called for a break, and Gambon magicked up a cigarette from out of his beard. He and I were often to be found outside the stage door, having 'a breath of fresh air', as we referred to it. There would be painters and plasterers and chippies and sparks, and among them all would be me and Dumbledore having a crafty cigarette.

From Borrower to wizard, Tom Felton's adolescence was anything but ordinary. His early rise to fame saw him catapulted into the limelight aged just twelve when he landed the iconic role of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films.

Speaking with candour and his own trademark humour, Tom shares his experience of growing up on screen and as part of the wizarding world for the very first time. He tells all about his big break, what filming was really like and the lasting friendships he made during ten years as part of the franchise, as well as the highs and lows of fame and the reality of navigating adult life after filming finished.

Prepare to meet a real-life wizard.
