Everyone Here Is Lying is set in Stanhope, a suburban community that has more than its fair share of secrets and lies. This domestic thriller has great tension and centres around a missing child. Avery Wooler is a nine-year-old little girl who goes missing after last being seen by her father - a man with little patience and a secret mistress on the side.
Filled with a group of unlikeable but interesting characters, Lapena takes her readers on a joyride of deceit, suspicious characters and an intriguing whodunnit. Readers benefits from seeing into the lives, lies and omissions of various characters in the small town and will, no doubt, suspect pretty much everyone because ev-er-y-one has secrets to hide.
I had to suspend disbelief over one character's abilities and shear wickedness, but Lapena takes us on a non-stop, wild ride with short chapters and great misdirection that will keep readers guessing and second-guessing. And despite the rather abrupt ending, this is one of my favourite books by this Toronto-based, lawyer-by-day, thriller-author-by-night who is at the top of her game.

Welcome to Stanhope! A safe neighborhood. A place for families.
William Wooler is a family man, on the surface. But he's been having an affair, an affair that ended horribly this afternoon at a motel up the road. So when he returns to his house, devastated and angry, to find his difficult nine-year-old daughter, Avery, unexpectedly home from school, William loses his temper.
Hours later, Avery's family declares her missing.
Suddenly Stanhope doesn't feel so safe. And William isn't the only one on his street who's hiding a lie. As witnesses come forward with information that may or may not be true, Avery's neighbors become increasingly unhinged.
Who took Avery Wooler?
Nothing will prepare you for the truth.
