Clark's writing style is crisp, and her pacing is steady as she builds her story that's filled with corruption, lies and murders as Harriet and her new partner try to figure out who is murdering city aldermen and leaving 30 pieces of silver on the bodies. There is a secondary storyline about an unknown caller who is hounding Harriet and while that plot wasn't concluded, I am eager to see where it goes in the next book and how it relates to the death of Harriet's first partner.
I enjoy how Clark balances the suspense with Harriet's personal and professional lives. She and her partner Detective Vera Li are a good duo as they learn to work together, and their banter adds some levity.
While not quite as strong as the first book in the series, this police procedural is filled with tension, twists and is a great pick for fans of Robert Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite series and Nadine Matheson's Inspector Anjelica Henley series.

Book Description from GoodReads: In the second book in the Detective Harriet Foster thriller series, author Tracy Clark weaves a twisted journey into the underbelly of Chicago as Harriet and her team work to unmask a serial killer stalking the city’s aldermen.
The Chicago PD is on high alert when two city aldermen are found dead: one by apparent suicide, one brutally stabbed in his office, and both with thirty dimes left on their bodies—a betrayer’s payment. With no other clues, the question is, Who else has a debt to pay?
