This fourth book in the Bree Taggart series balances police procedural with tense thriller scenes and a side of family life. This is an easy series to dip into among my other reads with a cast I enjoy coming back to again and again.
Right Behind Her centres around a 30-year-old gruesome murder that happened at the farm Sheriff Bree Taggert grew up on with her dysfunctional family. Readers get insight into Bree's early family life; understand why she's still dealing with the trauma and how it impacted who she became.
This was a good read but not my favourite in the series. The mystery felt a bit convoluted as several male main characters are introduced and were sometimes hard to keep track of. I was felt the romance aspect and Bree's continuing struggle to delegate in her role as Sheriff are becoming repetitive. That said, these books are only set months apart in Bree's life, so the slow burn aspect is believable for Bree, but a bit too slow going for this reader
I have already read book 5 in the series (Dead Against Her) which I really enjoyed (review to come) and look forward to catching up on this series' backlist in the next few weeks to prepare for book 9 (Track Her Down) which pubs in January 2025!
Note: This is a great series for fans of Robert Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite series.

Book Description from GoodReads: The discovery of human remains unearths another nightmare from Sheriff Bree Taggert’s past in a bone-chilling thriller by #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh.
Twenty-seven years ago, Sheriff Bree Taggert’s father killed her mother, then himself. Now Bree and her younger brother, Adam, find human bones on the grounds of their abandoned family farm. The remains are those of a man and a woman, both murdered in the same horrible way.
When the investigation determines the murders occurred thirty years ago, Bree’s dead father becomes a suspect, forcing Bree to revisit the brutal night she’s spent most of her life trying to forget. The only other suspect is an unlikely squatter on the Taggert farm who claims to know secrets about Bree’s past. When he mysteriously disappears and Bree’s niece is kidnapped, the cold case heats up.
Bree has stoked the rage of a murderer who’ll do anything to keep his identity—and motives—a secret. To protect everyone she loves, Bree must confront a killer.
