I bought this book for my Kindle based only on a read-alike recommendation for Melinda Leigh's Bree Taggart series.
This book had me from beginning to end. I loved the main character FBI Special Agent Mercy Kilpatrick who returns to her small hometown of Eagle's Nest after 15 years of no contact after a tragedy rocked their family. She wants the past to stay in the past and she's nervous to return to the small town and her family who has shunned her for over a decade.
Mercy was raised off the grid in a 'prepper' family of strict survivalists where she felt like the black sheep of the family. She is sent to Eagle's Nest to help local law enforcement when someone starts targeting local, reclusive survivalists and begins stockpiling their weapons, making the FBI concerned about a possible domestic terrorist attack. Mercy also believes there's a link to this case and two murders that happened before she left town.
This book had it all. Tense scenes, strong and smart but flawed female main character with some unique familial baggage, a few twists, and a shocker of an ending. There's also a touch of romance but I'm glad it didn't overpower the suspense.
This is the first book in a six book series - one of many series by Kendra Elliot. I eagerly plan to read more books by this author soon.
Book Recommendation: I highly recommend this series for fans of Melinda Leigh's Bree Taggart series and Lisa Regan's Detective Josie Quinn series.

Book Description from GoodReads: FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick has been waiting her whole life for disaster to strike. A prepper since childhood, Mercy grew up living off the land—and off the grid—in rural Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. Until a shocking tragedy tore her family apart and forced her to leave home. Now a predator known as the cave man is targeting the survivalists in her hometown, murdering them in their homes, stealing huge numbers of weapons, and creating federal suspicion of a possible domestic terrorism event. But the crime scene details are eerily familiar to an unsolved mystery from Mercy’s past.
Sent by the FBI to assist local law enforcement, Mercy returns to Eagle’s Nest to face the family who shunned her while maintaining the facade of a law-abiding citizen. There, she meets police chief Truman Daly, whose uncle was the cave man’s latest victim. He sees the survivalist side of her that she desperately tries to hide, but if she lets him get close enough to learn her secret, she might not survive the fallout…
